Bombs are a type of ground attack weapon used by military aircraft. They are some of the most basic weapons usable by aircraft, and are compatible with a wide variety of them.

Overview

In the games of the series are the following types of bombs: high explosive bomb (in Ace Combat series called Unguided Bomb - UGB)), incendiary bomb (Napalm Bomb - NPB), cluster bomb (Self-Forging Fragmentation Submunitions Bomb - SFFS), thermobaric bomb (Fuel Air-Explosive Bomb - FAEB), guided bomb (Guided Penetration Bomb - GPB).

Types of bombs

Unguided Bomb (Small)

The small Unguided Bomb (UGBS) is the most basic bomb variant. It has a light weight and a similarly small warhead, causing considerable damage with an impact and having a small effect radius. Their lack of power is compensated by a plentiful ammunition pool. Examples of this bomb type include the American MK-82 bomb and the Russian FAB-250.

The "Small" designation was used exclusively in its introductory appearance in Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies. Starting from Ace Combat 5, the weapon was renamed to simply "Unguided Bomb", because of the omission of the UGBM.

Unguided Bomb (Medium)

The intermediary choice of the UGB line, the Medium Unguided Bomb (UGBM) combines elements of the UGBL and the UGBS, balancing good destructive power with a well-sized ammo pool.

The weapon existed only in Ace Combat 04. In Ace Combat 5, the UGBM was omitted, leaving just the Large and Small versions.

Unguided Bomb (Large)

The Large Unguided Bomb is the strongest Unguided Bomb in all of its appearances, having a large blast radius as well as a large amount of damage.

MUGB

Featured in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon and Ace Combat Infinity, the "MUGB" is a unique type of bomb designed specially for bomber aircraft. In this regard, its use is limited to the B-1B Lancer and the B-2A Spirit.

MUGBs are large sized weapons designed to cause massive damage to enemy targets. Unlike their smaller brethren, their use is limited to Air Strike Mode, and cannot be used in normal flight. In ASM, the pilot must move an aiming reticle and use it to "mark" a particular location, signaling a bomb's impact area.

Because of the specialization of bomber aircraft against ground enemies, they have a large ammunition payload and a fast reloading sequence, allowing a player to release several bombs in sequence and perform a carpet bombing. In multiplayer, the bombs are vulnerable to attack helicopters, which can track them and shoot them out of the sky before hitting their objective.

Trivia

  • Although not designed for such a purpose, bombs can be used as improvised air-to-air weapons and used to strike enemy aircraft.
    • In the Ace Combat 3 mission "Bug Hunt", Nemo ends trying to drop an anti-nanobyte bomb on Rena Hirose's Su-37R to stop the rogue nanobytes from killing her. This is the only occasion in the series which the player is forced to perform the maneuver.
